Costumes RSS FeedsRe: Serger recommendations? - if you are going to be using your machine allot, do NOT buy a brother. They are not really even made by brother, they are made by janome. And to brother specifications. I had a brother serger. Loved it, easy to use great product, untill the motor burned out within 8 months of having it. Would have cost more to replace the motor (if they could find the part) than the machine was worth (yes even under warranty) I say go for a 2-3-4 machine, I just got myself a huskylock 2-3-4-5 machine and I love love love it. Still learning the quirks, but it works great!...Feed Source: CraftyVixens.tribe.net Re: Serger recommendations? - I would at least get a 2/3/4 machine. If you are planning on sewing clothes to sell a 5 threader might be a good investment though. I recently purchased this one:

I had a 4 threader before and this one is MUCH more complicated, but it does so much more. It may sound a little cheesy to purchase a sewing machine form HSN, but the nice thing about HSN is that you can make payments on their more expensive items. I was able to divide up the payments on the machine into 4 payments which made it a lot more manageable for me. It is a wonderful machine, just very complicated ..takes a lot of patience on the operator's side :)... Re: !!Halloween Costumes!! - Carrie. Pink prom dress, tiara, floral bouquet, and lots of pig's blood.... Re: !!Halloween Costumes!! - woo hoo, just got back from buying fabric for mine!
Going to be Dr. Mrs. The Monarch from the Venture Bros. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:DrMrsTheMonarch.jpg I love sexy Super Villainesses!
I bought a black leotard that I will change and trim the neckline, and add the emblem and wings too (not sure if I should go for paint or wonder-under for the emblem).
Will make vinyl thigh high "stockings" that pair with matching pumps to create the illusion of boots (actually, I need some Vixen advice on that, will start another thread). Vinyl leftovers should be plenty for the choker and crown. I bought some yellow satin gloves on eBay, but I may have to dye them.
And that's it. Hopefully will be only a few hours of sewing and detailing. :)... Serger recommendations? - This is kinda a X-post from the bay sewing tribe but I thought I'd ask here aswell:)
Hey there, I'm new to this tribe. I'm a sahm of twin boys and am finally have energy to start craftin' again.
I'm looking for a serger. My intention is to start a small in home clothing business serving my local community doing tees, hoodies, yoga pants, you know, simple standards. Basically, I need a good work horse. My local dealer offers the brother 3034D, a 3/4 machine. What do ya think? Will this one suffice or should I be going for a 5 threader or more $$$ model?... Re: boot alterations for fitting large calves - The lacing ide is good . . . it really depends on how much more room you need . . . I often have to alter thick leather riding boots for actors with big calves . . . I place a 3-5 inch slit in the back or inseam side, stitch in a thick piece of 3" wide elastic making a slight gusset that will stretch further . . .... Re: sewing machine glitch - Mine has been annoying me relentlessly (thread keeps breaking), I wonder if this is all it needs Worth a shot!... Re: location of tribe members - I have my home in Portland Oregon, not too many friends yet since I just moved from Grant's Pass
However, I have a room in southern cali at my pop's and that is more like the crafty home base storage dump.... Re: working with leather - I want something that will be really soft. I was thinking lambskin maybe, but I really haven't decided yet. I may just end up working with whatever I can get in the right colors.... Re: working with leather - Using a leather needle is very important. if you have trouble with the leather sticking to your foot, (not moveing through) try placing a piece of wax paper under and a piece over your leather before placing it in your machine, this will aid in movement and tears off easy after sewing is finished. Depending on what you are trying to make, becareful how many layers of leather, my machine will sew through 3 layers no more, and I have also had to learn to slow down, going fast increases your chances of breaking your needle... Re: working with leather - what type of leather are you talking about.? I use a leather/jean needle.. but it depends on what type of leather I'm using ..I like Deer, Moose, and buffalo the best..depending on what I'm making .some pig for lighter stuff..it also comes in the most colors .... working with leather - Has anyone ever sewn leather in their sewing machine? I just ordered a book that gives some tips, but I am impatient and was wondering anyone here had any tips on the topic.... Re: Location of tribe members. - New York, NY... Re: !!Halloween Costumes!! - I am adding to my belly dancing costume that I made but with a Dia de los muertos feel to it.
My costume consists of a black bra with copper mirror pieces salvaged from an old neck lase and a pair of earrings, a tassel yarn belt with red, black and silver and white tassels and yarn falls, and a black and red vinyl under skirt .
What I am adding to it : new ruffle pants, garter style with solid black lace from thigh to toes, a black and white pin stripe shirt that stops just under the bust and it will have a deep purple tafetta ruffle neck.
And a matching purple tafetta and black velvet bustle over skirt.
My hat will have a skull, and some tafetta and feather detail.... Orphan Works Bill: Gov. Geared To Exploit Artists! - Imagine a world where the things you made belonged not to you, but to someone else - unless you paid for the right to own them first. Under the Orphan Works Bill, anyone who produces a creative work would have to pay exorbitant sums of money for the simple act of creating art and for the continued ownership of their art through unending copyright registry fees.
This is what the Orphan Works Bill proposes: the bill proposes that as soon as any work of art is created, it would be required to be registered for a moderately high fee with ALL of SEVERAL copyright houses and entered into a giant database. Anyone who does not do this would risk any creation being taken and sold by someone else, and that would be legal because ALL UNREGISTERED WORK would be considered ORPHANED. This includes such simple things as family photos - if posted on the Internet and not registered with a copyright database, your photo album could be used in a series of ads by a major corporation for their latest c... Re: sewing vinyl - Thank you, that was so helpful!... Re: sewing vinyl - most vinyl has a knit backing and that is what you will be sewing into (assuming right sides together sewing, not top stitching), so use the strongest ball point needle you can find.
i suggest using wax paper or tissue paper BETWEEN the layers of right sides together seaming, and wax paper or tissue paper ON TOP OF the vinyl as you sew.
yes, agreed, use the teflon foot, but if you don't have it (they are cheap on the internet, tho, so get one asap), the paper helps.
test your patterns, there are no do-overs in vinyl the holes in the stitching show when you remove them and also weakens the integrity of the material.
yes, there is a bias on vinyl and there is a "grain" / direction. don't just use this like a craft fabric, use it like real fabric to get the best results on your garmetn or costume.
use a glue stick or staples or something to baste yoru seams into place BEFORE you sew and be sure to stop frequently to check pull on fabric.
clip the curves GENEROUS... Re: Is there anyone physically challenged in the tribe that can give me some advice? - I wonder if you might be able to use your left elbow it's worth a shot
Good luck! I am really interested in how you overcome this obstacle. Please let us know : )
: D... Re: Is there anyone physically challenged in the tribe that can give me some advice? - Rosy, thanks. Those suggestions sound pretty good. I'll have to see if I can make one of them work.... Re: sewing vinyl - You are going to need a tefflon foot for your machine!
OR a roller foot, or even wax paper works. Vinyl STICKS!... Copyright © 2008, Typojoe.com. All Rights Reserved. |
