There is No Bandwidth Crisis - There is no bandwidth crisis. At our highest usage, we are using less than 50% of the available bandwidth worldwide. WORLDWIDE. So why is it we need usage caps in the first place? Presumably, according to the telcos and cable companies, we are quickly using up available bandwidth and when it's gone it's gone. That's what they are telling us. But even at the current growth rate, we won't use up the world's available bandwidth for many years. And simple infrastructure upgrades will continue to make more bandwidth available over time, always keeping us well ahead of the game. I wish there was a way to call the telcos and cable companies on their blatent lying about bandwidth capability, and the fact that they are using that argument to apply caps to people's usage. Boycotts are all well and good but sometimes you don't have any choice in provider and have to take what is handed to you. How do we communicate to the telcos and cable companies, call their bl...

Did dinosaurs die from malaria? - Science daily has an article discussing a new book, "What Bugged the Dinosaurs? Insects, Disease and Death in the Cretaceous," by George and Roberta Poinar. In it they discuss the effect that insect born disease and parasites possibly had on the mass extinction of the dinosaurs. Modern technigues have shown that diseases like malaria existed during the Cretaceous and were present in blood taken from parasites preserved in Amber. I love the new information we can discover from materials that are so old, and build such complex pictures of what was essentially a completely different world. Well worth the time to read the full article. It sort of puts a damper on the Jurasic Park idea though, if there are parasitic organisms mixed up in the dino blood samples there is even less chance of sequencing dinosaur DNA than ever....

How Many Times Have I Given My Password? - OK. Keep in mind I have many different passwords. You can't use my MySpace password with my Bank account. You can't use my Paypal password with my email. But I do have a couple general passwords that I use to sign up for websites. As I was working today I realized - I signed up for 5 different new services out there and I used that same password. I would guess I sign up for 20-30 new sites a week. Thats a lot of places where my password is. How do I know if my password is safe? Granted, they can't get to my financials with this password, but they could find my profile in several other places and make life more difficult for me. Change the password, change or even delete the profile. It's not a big deal for me. If I lose my MySpace profile, or the multiple Ning sites I signed up for, that is OK. I can always change the basic password and start over. It would be a pain, but at least it's not affecting my overall personal and financial life. Once aga...

Comcast Video Download Service Introduced - Let’s see your a Comcast executive and you are looking at ways to guarantee success of a new video download service. So the executive comes up with a plan. 1st Lets cap bandwidth on all of our customers to 250gb per month 2nd Lets scare people into canceling their Vudu, Apple TV, Download Netflix Account, or any other service which people use to download media by imposing the cap! 3rd Lets introduce a Video download service. 4th Lets tell customers using our Video download service it does not count against their cap! Well the 4th item has not been announced yet, but I could see the greedy executives at Comcast contemplating this. After all its within their...

Free Broadband, Part 4,892 - Another company is proposing to offer free broadband everywhere. M2Z is gathering venture capital funding and preparing to bid on next year's auction of the advanced wireless services-3 spectrum. I wish them luck. Their business model, based on getting the spectrum in the first place, indicates deployment by late 2009, with ultimately 95% of the country covered by their ad-supported, free wireless broadband at speeds of up to 768 kbs, almost twice as fast as current wireless broadband offerings. They also intend to offer "premium" services of 3-6 mbps for the low low cost of $20 a month. Sounds good to me, as I sit and write my check out for 3 mbps monthly through ATT DSL and it's a lot higher than $20. Of course, the telcos and current wireless providers are crying foul. They don't want to compete with free. It might force them to offer higher speeds at more reasonable costs. As it is, I've long believed that the telcos and cable companies are gouging ...

Google Chrome - Is it Worth it? - Well, Google went and did it: They put out a browser. The new Chrome Browser is in Beta and it looks great for now. Do we really need another browser in the war? For those who don't know: There are 4 main browsers - IE, Firefox, Safari and Opera. You then have a bunch of others that are just as important, but are not as popular as these four. Google Chrome is the "Open Source" Browser with a faster load time. It uses a "sandbox" practice so malware has a harder time getting through. It is based on the Webkit, which is the open-source browser engine that Safari uses. It also has security and anti-phishing features installed and is totally customizable. Just like Firefox, you can get plugins to enhance your browser. The system embraces multi-process architecture which should not take down the whole browser if one page hangs. I reported it on my Flickr as the "AW SNAP" page. Another big advance is the searching capability (gee! Who would have thunk tha...

Why I Don't Trust Wikipedia - This is not a political post; I could have easily used any other Wiki example to make my point. It has been revealed that in the 24 hours preceding the announcement of Sarah Palin as the Vice Presidential candidate for the Republican party, an intentionally deceptive "Young Trigg" amended the Wikipedia entry pertaining to her. A rather unremarkable entry turned into something overly glowing and complimentary. More than 30 edits were made in the hours leading up to the big announcement regarding Palin, and several hundred have been made since. The powers that be at Wikipedia have now blocked changes and have amended some of "Young Trigg's" additions to Palin's bio, but they have not removed all of the changes. The day of the announcement, my coworker went straight to Palin's Wikipedia entry and read it out loud so we could all hear it. At the time I thought, "Wow, what a bio!" As an academic, I've been reluctant to use Wikipedia for anything of importanc...

Your first initial can earn you more spam - I guess its my own fault for being called Matthew, but my email address (almost all of them) start with a letter that means I get more spam than those with other starting letters. Those letters are "A", "M", "S", "R" and "P". Email addresses that start with these letters on average have 40% of their incoming messages being spam. The results of a study by the University of Cambridge and reported by the BBC looked at around 550 million emails going to a British ISP to determine what factors could attract spam and found the link to how the first letter of your address can affect your spam levels The most popular letters for spammers were "A", "M", "S", "R" and "P". about 40% of all the messages arriving in the e-mail inboxes of accounts with addresses that had one of those characters as their first letter were junk. Much less popular were "Q", "Z" and "Y". For these cases, spam was running at abo...

Listen to Youtube - I like online videos but I don?t have time to watch as much as I like. At work I can listen to podcasts as much as I like until it is time to go home. I have yet to figure a way to watch videos while I work so audio only is for my situation. The difference between video and audio is video requires complete attention. Audio can be enjoyed while actually doing other tasks. Well there are tons of online videos that are not action based that I would like to hear just the audio. Interviews, standup comedy, etc are in video format but work just as well as audio only formats. A Firefox add on helps me with this is media convertor. I can download a video & convert it to mp3 format to go on my mp3 player. It is a two step process so it is simple enough for anyone to use. You can convert into many more formats so it is as versatile as you need it to be. Youtube is full of stuff that does not need to be seen to be enjoyed. Audio only stuff will always be a huge market for new media producers...

Pandora Should Leave USA - I don?t know how Pandora works. I just know it does. Pandora is an online music service I?m sure most of you have heard of if not used. I started using it last year and I absolutely love it. It learns what you like as you use it. You pick a single song or artist when starting up and it selects songs that it thinks you will enjoy based on some algorithm that is beyond my comprehension. I have been listening to Pandora since I sat down in front of my computer today and have heard about 2 songs that I was not crazy about and zero that I hated. That is a pretty good music service in my opinion. I hate fm / am radio because of the commercials. I have no time for them. That is why I like podcasts because most have no commercials. Even the live reads on some podcasts like Todd?s are fine because they take up less time and I think they sound more authentic because they are coming from the mouth of someone I trust for information. I think it was the last podcast when Todd mentioned...

Solar Icemaker Created - I just saw some information on a solar icemaker created by some students in San Jose. This is a great invention. The picture I saw was a big device but who cares. Regular commercial icemakers are big as well. It is not shocking that college kids would create something like this since many of them use ice for sports injuries, iced tea, & picnics. Oh yeah some even put their beer on ice. That is a shocking revelation I know. So now that they have broken the ice, this machine will take off. College students will make a better one because of the uses I stated earlier. Ice is expensive too. $2.50 for a small bag is kind of steep when you consider it is just frozen water. I spend about $10 a week on ice for my water cooler which equals about $350 per year for my busy work season. Other people with the ability to tinker can make one as well. Mechanics and do it yourselfers will have no problem trying this stuff out and improving upon the original invention. Everyone I know uses i...

Going Postal in Second Life - The recent story about the lady who tried to kidnap her former boyfriend after a breakup is disturbing but I hope people don?t panic. The couple met in Second Life, the online virtual world. They actually met in person here in reality but broke up shortly afterward. The lady decided she was not ready to let go of this unlucky fellow so she went to get her man. She was armed with duct tape, a BB gun, a taser, her dog, and handcuffs. You can?t make this stuff up! Oh and she was a postal worker. Not that all crazy people work at the post office but the term ?going postal? did not just get made up for no reason. I can?t wait to mention this story to my post office people who are really cool & nice people by the way. I just do not want to see some moron talking head on the news (not that I watch the news), doing a special report on the dangers of Second Life & online socializing. It will be made a big deal just because it is internet related and unusual. The definition of new...

Comcast Caps - Todd has been rallying the troops to combat bandwidth caps for consumers for a while now. I agree it sux to have a cap any service that previously had no limit. Cell phones have actually gone the other way. In the old days you pretty much paid by the minute but now you can buy as many minutes as you want at an affordable price in most places. You can even pay for unlimited services. The problem with Comcast and others limiting use is the fact that they are just trying to protect their old media. They don?t want people using new media. It is a logical stance they are taking however problematic for us as customers. Calling the cable companies is a good idea because businesses do respond to complaints but maybe not in companies the size of Comcast. Begging our ?leaders? in congress to change laws, make restrictions for companies, etc. will likely not work and will likely result in bureaucracies that regulate media (FCC comes to mind) getting paid though fines. How does that benefit the...

My heart bleeds for your 250GB cap - Over here in Aus for $90 a month I get 20GB which is one of the larger consumer cable Internet plans you can get. I can understand why US companies imposing a limit when there used to be none would be annoying so many people, including Todd. Regardless of whether or not the Comcast broadband deal represents good value, to give someone something and then take it away will always get them annoyed. Having offered unlimited broadband for so long, to then restrict that will cause great unrest amongst their customers, even those that use nowhere near 250GB a month. The telco's might have been given some slack if they had not been behaving in such an anti-consumer way recently. Trying to create a tiered Internet to improve their revenue. Lobbying against net neutrality. Tracking customers traffic to sell targetted advertising. Redirecting 404's and even embedded ads to their own services. Bandwidth sha...

Boycott Comcast Now on 250Gb Bandwidth Cap - With Comcast declaring 250gb Bandwidth caps for those using their Internet Service. I am calling for a Boycott of Comcast. This move by Comcast is not a surprise but in the modern utilization of the Internet the 250gb Cap will destroy Internet Innovation. As a business owner that helps media creators this will cause a decrease in consumption of new media and will result in comcast customers being locked into Comcast services. This is Anti–Competitive as people will now have to curtail normal usage of their Internet Connection. As an Example My family of 5 are all active Internet users, we down-load movies through our Apple TV and Vudu box many of them High Definition. My kids are connected to educational resources that requires them to download videos. We watch and listen to a variety of programming that requires downloading of legitimate content. New Friendfeed in beta - The Social Network Friendfeed is changing their look. They launched it at beta.friendfeed.com. The big change is it moves the navigation links from the top to the right side. It's now got a similar look to Google Groups because of it. The new version added an option in Friend Settings where you can put your friends into a more organized group. I think we called them Cliques in High School . You can now also share photos easier. No need to put it in Flickr - just select the form box, then in the dropdown chose "Photos". You'll be able to upload a picture from your computer. The overall look is a bit more organized. For instance, the recommended page just has the subscribe button on each profile instead of every network they belong to. After all, I don't need to know that, just whether I want to follow them on Friendfeed. I really like the new look. It's easy and familiar. It's got some great n...

iLawn Mowers - I have seen several versions of automatic or robotic lawn mowers online yet I am still skeptical. Mostly I have seen ones similar to the one pictured at the end of this post. But I have run across a couple of big ones. They all seem to be guided by GPS or an underground cable. The problem I have with the tiny plastic looking ones is they look, well, frail. They appear to only be suited for perfect terrain, weather, and grass height. Most lawn mowers I have seen look pretty rough after about 3 uses. The cost on these auto mowers is nothing to sneeze at either so I see a long way to go before these admittedly cool devices become anything close to the norm. Also these things appear very small so you had better have a matching lawn. Too much area would kill these little things. Of course it does not matter how long it takes since you don?t even have to be outside to run it. I have seen remote controlled mowers but having to sit outside to control it would not be much better than actuall...

Blu Ray Pricing - I saw where Sony was dropping one of their Blu Ray players down to $300. This will obviously send other companies to slashing their prices as well. There are different opinions on what the price point is where Blu Ray will take over DVD sales. I don't know if it is $199 or $149 or even as low as $99. One thing that will slow the conquest is the sluggish economy. I am not one of these people who always think the sky is falling but I recognize a slow down when I see it. I am not talking about any stats I see on the ?news? or musings by experts. I am basing this totally on people I know in business and others I talk to on a regular basis about it. So a Blu Ray player is something that consumers can do without especially when most own a device that does the same thing but just not as good. Some would argue that people did not wait to buy a HDTV when they had a TV that did the same job just not as good as an HD model. But that boom was a while back when the overall economy was better and...

IOGEAR's Wireless USB to VGA kit - I so want one of these. I can think of half-a-dozen applications I could use this for. It has a range of up to 30 feet and can stream whatever you want from your desktop/laptop pc to any monitor/television with a VGA port. I have one of those. My kids are begging me to add another cable box in the downstairs office where their computers are, and I'm resisting. This would probably save me the hassle; all they'd need to do is use the nice spare television with the VGA port and watch their DVD's from one of the computers on a screen big enough for all of them to see. Not to mention they can have a heck of a time with their Youtube travels. The price is a bit steep, but it would solve a few problems for me, especially since our house seems to be the "koolaid house." You know, the house where all the kids hang out....

Why does behavioral ad targetting annoy me? - A recent article in Slate magazine talked about some of the recent moves by companies like NebuAd and Charter Communications around moves towards behavioral targetting of web ads. The basic idea is for your ISP or a third party site that sees a lot of your traffic like Google, to keep extensive records of your web activity, theoretically anonymized, and use it to create maps of how they expect you react when specific styles of ads and information are shown to you. At one level targetted advertising has a certain appeal, we get subjected to so much advertising that we get used to just ignoring. There are companies out there that possibly have products that I would benefit from. I might potentially have seen multiple ads for this company and simply ignored them from habit. Both of us have lost in this scenario. If the advertising companies were able to target ads that would be for products that interested me, and I could some...

How You Know You Made It - Do you know how you can tell when your product has ?made it? It is when other products that are similar are called your products name. For instance when most people ask for a tissue they are just as likely to say ?Kleenex? as anything else. Of course when people are talking about an mp3 player they will call it an ipod even if it were made by Creative or Sansa. I am guilty of this as well and I even have a bias against ipods because I don?t like the way they lock you into just their services. I make an effort not to call my Zen an ipod but I do it about 60% of the time then have to correct myself. I think I do it because subconsciously I know the person to whom I am speaking will likely not understand what a Zen is but will know what an ipod is most of the time. It must really be a tremendous help to your marketing team when the product you want to sell is promoted every second of everyday by so many people using them and using the product name even when it does not apply. ...

NBC Ratings Due To Hi Def - How much did High Def help NBC?s ratings for the Olympics? I would say it boosted them a great deal. While I did not think NBC?s High Def Quality was as good as I have seen, it was much better than past Olympics in Standard Definition. Mainstream sports don?t necessarily need HD to thrive but obscure sports are helped tremendously by HD and other video enhancements. The slow motion effects for sports like gymnastics and synchronized diving show small details that the lay person would not even be able to catch in real time. I have no idea how the judges see this stuff so I think they should judge the replay not the live event. Normally I would not watch synchronized diving even if it were held in the middle of my town. But I actually got caught up in it because I could see the difference in the teams through the video technology that has not been there in the past. The Chinese women?s team was the essence of perfection. It was as if one entity was performing as two humans. They eve...

Why Go To The Bank? - Why do people go to a bank? To get cash, apply for a loan, or deposit checks? Well if you work for a decent sized company you likely get direct deposit. If you need a loan you can apply online. But what if you run a small business? I happen to run one myself and I don?t have the luxury of direct deposit. I get checks from most of my clients so I have to drive to the bank at their set hours to put my money in there. I would pay extra not to have to do so. I don?t like making extra trips or stopping my route to go by the bank to make deposits. I?d love to just get the information off my checks then send that info to the bank. Technology Used To Hurt The Public - We all have seen those cameras at red light intersections. We all have slammed on our brakes when we do see one if fear of Big Brother mailing us a bill for our "transgression". At intersections with no camera we usually just go on through a yellow light, safely I might add. Basically the cameras which we are told are there for public safety are there to generate revenue for the county or city, whichever the case may be. There are many studies out that state that more accidents happen at red lights with cameras than occurred without them there. Just google it. The only study I found that suggested that the cameras reduce accidents was research done by a group connected to the insurance industry. Hmmm, I wonder what they have to gain from more traffic violations and accidents? I have even seen reports that the time between yellow light and red light is decreased so more people get caught! Boy they are really looking out for the little guy! I'm all for safety but I can count on one h...

Broadband Everywhere! - I don't know a lot about FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, but right now, I like the way he talks. To him, the availability of broadband should be considered as critical as copper lines were when telephone service began criss-crossing the country in the last century. At the time, telephones became the preferred and required way of communicating, and the Internet is quickly taking the same place in people's minds. "More and more people expect and demand to have access to the Internet and new wireless technologies," Martin says. "It is important that the (FCC) try to find new ways to address" those needs. I couldn't agree more. When I see statistics like "38% of rural households are broadband customers, and 57% of urban households are broadband customers," I wonder how those numbers are being reached. Does that mean only that many people are purchasing it, or that only that many people have it available? Even in my relatively large metropolitan area, broadband isn't available e...

Copyright Owners Must Consider 'Fair Use' - Have you shot any video of your kids lately and had some music on? Did you know that if you posted that video to YouTube that companies like Universal would often have that video removed for copyright violation. A Judge ruled today in the nations first such ruling that copyright owners must consider “Fair Use” of their works before sending takedown notices to online video-sharing sites. This is a huge win everyone. The doctrine of the DMCA already permits limited use of copyright materials without the owners permission especially when it is associated with positive and negative reviews. This ruling is a big win, and one that we should all applaud because to many times artist and companies are able to invoke so called copyright violation to squelch any type of public discourse. This hopefully will allow more babies to be recorded acting out or dancing to the music. [Wired]...

Gmail hacking tool to be released - I am sure given the audience of this blog that many of you are already forcing Gmail to use SSL, especially if you are on a public computer or wifi network. At the recent DefCon conference a "reverse engineer" Mike Perry presented a tool to hack into unsecured gmail communications on the same network. He plans to release this tool to the public within the next couple of weeks. According to the announcement and another report on webmonkeys, the reason for this release is that Google has updated the Gmail service to allow users to force connections to SSL without always specifying https when browsing to the site, but not forcing it to on as default. Forgive me if this seems like a fatuous reason to take this type of action, reminiscent of the type of justifications used by kidnappers, "if your loved one...

A Basic Lesson in New Media for the Uninitiated - Jeff the content director and I were joking at the beginning of the New Media Expo that the saying “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” would not apply during the New Media Expo. 3-D Coins - Soon, you may see your Quarters in a new way. The US Mint is working with a new 3-D modeling technology to design circulating and collectible coins. The Bald Eagle half dollar and James Monroe dollar are a couple coins that will be created using the FreeForm 3-D modeling system from SensAble Technologies. The coins will be more curved, organic and non-geometric using this new method. They are being created using a "Haptic" technology. This will enhance the feel of a coin, while creating a coin in a faster, more efficient method. Before, coins were duplicated using wax or clay models. The new process would take the 3-D computer scan of the coin to the CNC machines in which they are then engraved. The end result is precise detail and textures on each coin. It will also give the artists the ability to put more contour and design into a coin. Even the Penny will benefit from this new low-cost technology. The penny has been reported in the past to cost more tha...

Richard Cheese the Ultimate Classless Act - Update 2: Out of Respect for Brian Ibbott at Coverville.com I have opted to remove the video for Brian’s sake. I will be talking more about Richard Cheese and his demand letter later.  A simple apology by Richard Cheese which has been asked for, and not yet given would have gone a long way. Well over 20 people video taped the performance of Richard Cheese I was not the only one. Every performer prior to Richard had been taped by a huge number of attendees. We were never told that cameras were not allowed. As it turns out, post event Richard Cheese has a clause in his contract that prohibited filming. No one attending the event knew this at the time. In my video I only played two short clips to show the attack on me personally and that of Richard Spitting on another fan which clearly falls under fair use regardless. While Richard did forcefully remove the camera from my hands and throw it back at me which hit me...

Can Dell challenge Apple in MP3's - A recent article in Businessweek discusses how Dell plans to make a second play into the MP3 space based on its recently acquired Zing software and the ex Apple iPod executive, Tim Bucher, that came with it. The strategy that they are taking looks to drive the MP3 player market right into Dell's sweet spot, but the question is going to be whether they can produce an attractive player, and if they cannot what other ways could they take advantage of the market. Dell has a history of taking a trial run in a market, leaving and coming back stronger running back to when they first entered the laptop market. The failure of the first attempt caused them to post their first ever loss. They studied the lessons they learnt from this and re-entered the laptop market bigger and better. Since then they have had trial runs in the server, storage, workstation, printer, peripheral a...

2008 New Media Expo Overview - The 4th Annual New Media Expo formally the Podcast Expo is now behind us. The move to Las Vegas was one that had many of us wondering how it would change the face of the show. The show first three expos where held in Ontario California. The positive thing about the venue being in Ontario offered no distractions which was great for companies participating that were trying to reach new media creators aka podcasters. But Ontario was not a good venue for Business to Business development. With the show move to Vegas this year my team had hoped that we would have the best of both worlds in that we would get to talk to a lot of business people and podcasters. My perspective on the show this year is that we met with a number of podcasters that have been at the show year after year but we had only a handful of new blood stop by the booth. While at the same time we had a significant number of business people, consultants and ...

Kids in the Tech Workforce - I have the entrepreneurial bug so I?m always checking out the latest news on successful business owners. I love technology based businesses. I salivate over the thought of someday working completely from home. So a few months back I was really impressed with a story I read in Inc Magazine about a teenager making money via myspace. It?s not what you are thinking?? no webcams and all that junk. This young lady was designing backgrounds and layouts for myspace pages. She had been using html since she was about 9 so she knew what she was doing. She started out making layouts for friends then expanded into getting paid. She also offers some layouts for free and makes money off of ads since her website is so popular. She made about $500,000 this past year! Not bad for a ?kid? huh? This ?kid? made more in a year than most adult Americans make in 10 years. She was able to do it because the tools were available to do so. The internet, cheap computers, and social networks made her business ...

iPhone iRony? - When the iPhone v.1 came out last year, Apple got a lot of flack for going Edge instead of 3G. Steve Jobs said in a public forum that the 3G chip took up too much power. There was also talk about the 3G chip being a really large chip almost doubling the size of the phone if it was in there. People didn't care. They wanted speed over power. Then the chip size was reduced. So Apple decided to appease the masses and brought out the iPhone v.2. It had 3G which was 152 kbps faster than Edge. It was slimmer than the 1st version of iPhone. People were happy. That is, until they found out how much the 3G service sucked power out their iPhones Now in all fairness, I think a lot of people understood the 3G power issues getting into the new phone. I think the fact that there are other problems with 3G is the main reason why we are hearing about people not happy with the 3G power issues. Now there is talk about iPhone getting a mass recall. Apple and Infine...
