Eight cities in southern Brazil with nearly 100,000 people remained cut off by flooding. Helicopters - some provided by the government, others donated by businesses - have rescued more than 1,000 people. In the state of Santa Catarina, weekend downpours dumped as much water on the area as it usually receives in four months, cutting residents off from electricity, drinking water and food. State Gov. Nov. 24, 2008 Baltimore County seeks weather watchers - The Baltimore County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is recruiting volunteers to help watch for severe winter weather as part of a national network of amateur weather spotters. A weather spotter class to train volunteers will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at the county's Public Safety Building, 700 E. Joppa Road, Towson. Nov. 9, 2008 Hurricane Paloma batters southern Cuba - CAMAGUEY, Cuba Powerful Hurricane Paloma slammed into southern Cuba yesterday as authorities scrambled to move hundreds of thousands of people to safer ground and protect crops on an island still reeling from two other devastating storms. Paloma made landfall near Santa Cruz del Sur as an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm but quickly weakened into a still-ferocious Category 3 with winds of 120 mph and torrential rains, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. In the central-eastern province of Camaguey alone, more than 220,000 people were moved from low-lying, vulnerable areas to higher ground. About 170,000 people were evacuated in the eastern province of Las Tunas.
